Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth Without Youth comes to DVD and Blu-ray

Released May13th 2008

Academy Award-winning director Francis Ford Coppola (1975, Best Picture, Best Director, The Godfather, Part II; The Godfather; Patton) returns to filmmaking after an eight year hiatus with Youth Without Youth.

This Sony Pictures Classics film, starring Academy Award nominee Tim Roth (1996, Best Supporting Actor, Rob Roy, Pulp Fiction), Alexandra Maria Lara (The Downfall) and Bruno Ganz (The Downfall, Vitus) will be released on DVD and Blu-ray High-Def by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on May 13 for the suggested retail price of $29.95 on DVD and $38.96 for Blu-ray.

For his first film in approximately a decade, writer/director Francis Ford Coppola adapted a provocative novella by acclaimed Romanian author Mircea Eliade. The resulting film challenges traditional ideas about consciousness and time. Coppola calls Youth Without Youth “a tapestry of illusion.”

Synopsis:

Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth Without Youth stars Tim Roth as Dominic Matei, an aging professor of linguistics who finds his youth miraculously restored after surviving a cataclysmic event.

Dominic’s physical rejuvenation and apparent immortality is matched by a highly evolved intellect, which attracts the attention of Nazi scientists, forcing him into exile. While on the run, he is reunited with his lost love, Laura, and works to complete his research into the origins of human language.  When his research threatens Laura’s health, Dominic is forced to choose between his life’s work and the great love of his life.

“Most Impressive DVD of 2005”

Bragging rights this year go to Paramount's Danger: Diabolik. Mario Bava's super-criminal comic strip is a visual mother lode of color-saturated comic-book dynamism. We had no right to expect more than a revisit of the compromised laserdisc presentation from ten years ago, and were delighted when Paramount allowed producer Kim Aubry and Zoetrope to put together a great combination of improved picture, recovered original soundtrack and surprising extras that include a commentary with Tim Lucas and ("Ummmm - moo-oo-ha ha hah HAH HAH!")Diabolik himself, John Philip Law.
